Netflix makes bold The Night Agent season 4 move that changes everything

There’s some exciting news to share for fans of The Night Agent, but at the very same time, there’s also a bit of disappointing news that fans won’t particularly like. Netflix made a bittersweet announcement about the hit action thriller’s upcoming season, and no one could have seen this development coming—not even Peter Sutherland himself.

As previously teased back in April, Netflix went ahead and confirmed that production on The Night Agent season 4 has officially started in Los Angeles. That’s the exciting part of the news. The series begins filming its new season just a few months after the most recent series made its debut on the streamer. But there’s also a downside to this latest development.

While announcing production’s start on May 4, Netflix also dropped the piece of news we weren’t expecting. The Night Agent season 4 will be the final season of the fan-favorite series. Peter Sutherland has one last mission to take on to complete his story. Thankfully, the show’s creator has already confirmed that he has an epic conclusion planned to bring it to an end.

The Night Agent creator Shawn Ryan said in a statement shared in Netflix’s press release,

“Ever since the initial success of The Night Agent, I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey. I’m so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans. We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”

It’s not secret that compared to its unprecedented viewership numbers with its premiere in March 2023, The Night Agent shed eyeballs with each new season. The most recent release, the third season, showed a marked decline and even had us worried that season 4 might not happen. But all things considered, the show remains a global sensation and we never anticipated it actually ending this soon.

Even when hit Netflix shows decrease in popularity, a lot of them continue to be lucrative titles for the streamer that tend to stick around for multiple seasons, in a similar vein to The Lincoln Lawyer. With the legal thriller heading into its fifth season, it was safe to assume that The Night Agent would also run in tandem, but alas, Peter Sutherland’s endgame is on the way.

Fliming on the new season kicked off on May 4 and is expected to reach completion sometime in September 2026. Ultimately, the final season will arrive on our watch lists at some point in 2027. A quartet of new characters recently joined the cast, including Peter’s new partner and his ex-fiancée, but we’re expecting to learn more about season 4 as production continues.

Perhaps at the top of every fan’s wish list for The Night Agent’s final season is a return appearance from Luciane Buchanan as Rose Larkin. The actress joined the cast of Netflix’s Untamed season 2, which is also in production, but there’s still a possibility Rose could appear, if only for a cameo. Keep the hope alive and stay tuned for more news and updates!
