The Devil Wears Prada 2 instant Oscar predictions, Meryl Streep

This past weekend, audiences brought back a trend from the mid-2000s — going to see The Devil Wears Prada in a movie theater.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 cleared around $77 million at the domestic box office, certifying the sequel as a solid hit and repeating the success of the 2006 original film. But can the follow-up repeat the original’s runway-worthy strut into awards season?

With much of the masthead returning, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has a few opportunities to make a splashy appearance at the Oscars or, at the very least, the Golden Globes. Here’s where we could The Devil gets its due next year.

Best Actress — Meryl Streep

When considering the awards chances, we obviously must acknowledge the G.O.A.T. in the room. Streep is a four-time winner and 21-time nominee at the Academy Awards. She scored her 14th nomination back in 2007 for playing Runway editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly the first time around. As a reprisal of an already-nominated performance, the turn is working at a slight disadvantage. “That’s all” doesn’t have the exact razor-sharp cutting edge that it did 20 years ago, but Streep’s performance in the sequel is, unquestionably, a Meryl Streep performances. In other words: It’s completely captivating, if a little familiar. A nomination would be the legend’s first since 2018 with The Post, so she’s more than overdue. But save a spot in Musical/Comedy Actress for Streep, who won the honor in 2007 for the original.

Best Supporting Actress — Emily Blunt

Streep wasn’t the only acting nominee from The Devil Wears Prada on the night of the 2007 Golden Globes. Then-rising star Emily Blunt earned a Supporting Actress nomination, without the benefit of a split field. Shockingly, of the five nominees at the Globes at year, she was the only one who didn’t make the cut come Oscar time (explaining that bitter, long-standing beef between Blunt and Abigail Breslin.) For the sequel, Blunt’s Emily have a sizable supporting role, but it’s missing some of the depth of her first appearance and the genuine excitement that comes with the arrival of a new star.

Best Costume Design — Molly Rogers

Apart from Streep, costumer Patricia Field’s designs was the one other Oscar nomination that The Devil Wears Prada received. Field’s longtime collaborator Molly Rogers (an associate costume designer on the original) took over costuming duties for the sequel and could potentially follow in her mentor’s designer footsteps to Oscar night.
