The White House has caught some backlash for a post shared in light of Star Wars Day.
A meme of Donald Trump portrayed as the Mandalorian holding an American flas was shared on the White House’s official social media pages on Monday. Also featured in the image is Grogu (otherwise known as Baby Yoda.”
“In a galaxy that demands strength – America stands ready,” the post is captioned. “This is the way. May the 4th be with you.”
DECIDER reached out to Lucasfilm for comment.
Star Wars fans critical of the post flexed their own creative muscles in response to the meme, sharing their own images of Trump depicted as Jabba the Hutt, and even teased that they “always thought Trump looked like Jar Jar,” referring to Jar Jar Binks.
“strength is one thing, but what about the kids who can’t afford groceries or the families struggling to pay for healthcare that’s the battle we should be fighting,” one X user wrote.
“Bro really dropped a Star Wars edit with himself as Mando and Grogu,” another wrote with a laughing emoji. “This ain’t strength, this is straight delusion. May the copium be with you.”
Another questioned how “this is what official communication has become” from the White House’s account.
Per Axios, this is not the first year that the White House has attempted to join in on May the 4th festivities. According to the outlet, the White House posted an image last year of Trump as an extremely muscular Jedi with a red lightsaber, though critics were quick to point out that a red lightsaber typically signifies that its owner is part of the Dark Side of the Force. The post arrives less than three weeks ahead of the premiere of The Mandaloran and Grogu, which hits theaters on May 22.
