Update May 4, 2026

All eyes were on The Devil Wears Prada 2 heading into the weekend box office — and it delivered in style.

The long-awaited sequel debuted to $77 million domestically and $233 million worldwide, topping expectations and marking one of the biggest openings of the year. Powered by nostalgia and the return of Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, the film proved the enduring appeal of Miranda Priestly nearly two decades after the original hit theaters.

Lionsgate’s Michael dropped to second with $54 million, down just 44% from its massive debut — a strong hold that signals continued momentum as word of mouth keeps audiences coming back.

Universal Pictures’ The Super Mario Galaxy Movie landed in third with $12.1 million in its fifth weekend, continuing its impressive run as it closes in on the $900 million mark worldwide.

Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary held steady in fourth with $8.6 million, another solid showing for the sci-fi hit as it continues to draw crowds in its seventh weekend.

Rounding out the top five, Neon’s Hokum debuted with $6.4 million in limited release — an impressive start for the Adam Scott-led horror film, especially given its smaller footprint compared to the weekend’s biggest titles.

It’s about to get a whole lot more fashionable at the box office this weekend, with The Devil Wears Prada 2 strutting in to take the top spot.

Disney’s 20th Century Studios sequel — reuniting Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci — is poised to debut at No. 1 with a projected $85 million opening weekend, with some forecasts suggesting it could climb even higher. Globally, the long-awaited follow-up could land north of $175 million, signaling a massive start for the summer movie season.

Arriving nearly two decades after the original became a cultural touchstone, the sequel leans heavily on nostalgia while revisiting Miranda Priestly’s ever-evolving media empire and Andy Sachs’ career in a rapidly shifting industry. With strong presales and a star-driven ensemble, it’s shaping up to be a major blockbuster — and a rare female-driven title to kick off the summer box office.

That means last weekend’s winner, Lionsgate’s Michael, will slip to second place — but it’s holding strong. After a record-breaking debut, the Michael Jackson biopic is expected to bring in another $40 million to $50 million in its sophomore frame, a solid hold that keeps it firmly in the mix as word of mouth continues to drive audiences.

Universal’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie should follow in third with around $10 million to $15 million as it continues its impressive global run, while Amazon MGM’s Project Hail Mary remains a steady performer in fourth, eyeing another $8 million to $10 million.

Rounding out the top five, Neon’s Hokum — the buzzy horror release starring Adam Scott — is expected to make an early impact in limited release with roughly $5 million to $7 million before expanding nationwide in the weeks ahead.

Further down the chart, a mix of counterprogramming titles — including Animal Farm, Casa Grande, and the anime entry That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea — are entering the marketplace, though none are expected to challenge the weekend’s top tier.

All eyes now turn to whether The Devil Wears Prada 2 can convert its runway-ready debut into long-term staying power — and whether this fashion-forward sequel can keep audiences coming back well beyond opening weekend.
