A24 is enjoying the success — both cultural and commercial — of the dark romantic comedy film The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. The movie sparked an intense discourse about a variety of topics such as race, privilege, and a social evil unique to America following its release. With The Drama, A24 also concluded a coincidental trilogy of movies about modern relationships that managed to spark conversation and critical thinking. Just last year, audiences were equally swept away by Materialists, which grossed more than $110 million worldwide and received mostly positive reviews. The Drama is currently sitting at the edge of the $70 million mark worldwide, and is all but guaranteed to pass the $100 million milestone in the coming weeks.
The spiritually connected trilogy was kicked off, however, by a movie that was released in 2023. It’s currently available to stream on HBO Max domestically, but it won’t remain on the platform for much longer. The movie tells the story of childhood sweethearts in South Korea who are torn apart when one of them moves to pursue a better life in the United States. Years later, the one who stayed behind shows up in New York, essentially unannounced, stirring old memories and feelings. The movie was a solid box-office hit, grossing more than $40 million worldwide against a reported budget of $12 million. It marked the directorial debut of Celine Song, who also made Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal.

We’re talking, of course, about Past Lives. Starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro, the movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, and was then given a platform release by A24 after a few months. It holds a “Certified Fresh” 95% critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website’s consensus reads, “A remarkable debut for writer-director Celine Song, Past Lives uses the bonds between its sensitively sketched central characters to support trenchant observations on the human condition.” Song went on to receive an Oscar nomination for her original screenplay; Past Lives was also nominated in the Best Picture category.
