Hailee Steinfeld and Rashida Jones will star in Disney’s next animated movie, “Hexed,” the company revealed during its CinemaCon presentation to theater owners on Thursday.
“Hexed” is a new original film that “follows a teenage oddball and her Type A mom, who discovers her weirdness is actually hidden magic, transporting them to a world where magic can run free.” It will release in theaters this fall on Nov. 25.
Steinfeld is an Oscar nominee for “True Grit.” Her credits include “Sinners,” “Pitch Perfect,” “The Edge of Seventeen” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Jones was part of the cast of “Parks and Recreation” and starred in “I Love You, Man,” “The Muppets,” “On the Rocks,” and “Celeste and Jesse Forever.”
Josie Trinidad, the head of story on “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Zootopia,” will make her film directorial debut alongside Jason Hand, the “Moana 2” co-director and head of story on “Encanto.” Roy Conli and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster-Jones will serve as producers.
Disney is coming off the record-breaking success of last year’s “Zootopia 2,” which became the highest-grossing animated film of all time with $1.7 billion at the global box office by beating “Inside Out 2.” It also surpassed “Frozen 2” as Disney’s biggest animated film ever and was 2025’s highest-grossing movie. However, original animation like “Hexed” has proved to be more erratic. This spring’s “Hoppers” was a hit, but other films that weren’t sequels such as “Elio” and “Luca” have struggled to draw crowds.
During its presentation in Las Vegas to exhibitors, Disney debuted footage from its live-action “Moana,” “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” “Toy Story 5” and “Avengers: Doomsday.”
