If you haven’t already heard the bad news, Ransom Canyon has officially been canceled. Netflix opted not to renew the Western romantic drama series for a third season, ending the show starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly after only two seasons and 18 total episodes. It’s an unfortunate ending to a fan-favorite series that held a lot of promise and had more story left to tell.
Sadly, Ransom Canyon’s cancellation didn’t come out of the blue. Despite fans loving the show, the second season’s release notched an unmistakable viewership decline that likely didn’t entice Netflix to roll the dice on another season given the price tag the series carries with two high-profile leads. But before the trouble began for the show’s future, the showrunner had already teased season 3.
What would have happened in Ransom Canyon season 3
While the Ransom Canyon season 2 finale wrapped up most of the lingering storylines, like Staten and Quinn finally getting together and Lizzie preventing Kit from leaving town with a kiss, there were plenty of loose threads to carry over into a third season. The state of Double K and the tense relationship between new parents Yancy and Ellie were left to be explored.
Following the release of season 2, showrunner April Blair teased that Ransom Canyon season 3 would have included a “big event” that would have required the appearance of Quinn’s mother (who was played by Patricia Clarkson in season 2). Seemingly, Blair was teasing that Staten and Quinn could possibly be getting engaged or married, a milestone fans will now not get to see.
In additional post-mortem interviews, Blair spilled more secrets about the then in-the-works third season, which would have seen Quinn continuing to integrate herself in the world of country music. She took a big swing by creating her own music festival in season 2, and season 3 was set to introduce a fictional country singer who would have had their own original music in the show.
Speaking of new characters, Blair also hinted that Lucas and Kit were likely to reunite with someone from their past, which would would have almost definitely been either of their parents. The brothers had been on their own from the beginning of the series, and in season 1, Lucas held onto hope that their father would return. He probably would have if Netflix had renewed season 3.
Finally, the second season finale’s lone cliffhanger revolved around the dissolution of Yancy and Ellie’s relationship after the birth of their daughter Isabella. After all the chaos she caused, Sidney disappeared into the night, and according to Blair, he would have been determined to track her down as well as pursuing the truth about the oil on his land in order to win Ellie back.
Obviously, those were merely the storylines that were in development during the early days of the season 3 writer’s room and other twists could have taken shape, but we have a pretty good idea of what we’re missing out on thanks to Blair’s reveals. Maybe someday she will share even more details about what was in store for Ransom Canyon season 3, but that would only make us sadder.
