Some exciting news heading into the holiday season: Searchlight has announced a sequel to the beloved 2005 holiday film The Family Stone, with nearly the entire cast returning.
This includes Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, Paul Schneider, and Brian White.
The one big exception is of course Diane Keaton, who passed away in October 2025 at the age of 79.
The new film, titled The Families Stone will seemingly pay loving tribute: It picks up 20 years after the death of her character, matriarch Sybil Stone — something that was depicted in the original film — as the Stone family again reunites for Christmas, only to face the season’s biggest surprise: their father (Nelson) has unexpectedly invited the woman he’s fallen in love with to meet the family.
Production is set to take place in New York this fall.
Nelson reprises as patriarch Kelly Stone, with Danes back as Julie Morton, McAdams as Amy Stone, Mulroney as Everett Stone, Parker as Meredith Morton, Wilson as Ben Stone, Giordano as Thad Stone, Reaser as Susannah Stone, Schneider as Brad Stevenson, and Brian White as Patrick Thomas.
Tom Bezucha has returned to direct from his own script, with original producer Michael London back to produce alongside Shannon Gaulding for Groundswell Productions, along with Parker and Alison Benson for Pretty Matches Productions.
SVP of Production Taylor Friedman and Creative Executive Daniel Yu are overseeing the project for Searchlight Pictures, reporting to Heads of Production and Development DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary last year, The Family Stone watches as Everett Stone (Mulroney) brings his tightly wound girlfriend Meredith (Parker) home to meet his liberal, bohemian New England family over the holidays. A disastrous visit leads to romantic complications, shifting loyalties and the revelation that Keaton’s Sybil is terminally ill.
A heavily rewatched Christmas favorite, the film grossed over $92M worldwide in its December 2005 release with 20th Century Fox. Parker was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance.
She’s repped by CAA — which also reps filmmaker Bezucha — and Schreck Rose Dapello.
Danes is repped by Signpost Management, WME, and Ziffren Brittenham; McAdams by WME and Magnolia Entertainment; Mulroney by Paradigm; Nelson by UTA and Forward Entertainment; Wilson by WME; Reaser by UTA; Schneider by Innovative Artists and Finley Management; and White by Buchwald and Zero Gravity Management.
