Jason Statham has given us some amazing action features like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels to high-octane franchises like The Fast and the Furious, The Transporter, and The Expendables, to solo adventures like A Working Man, The Mechanic, and more — all are a testament to his immaculate action skills. And when you give him the story where he’s a man on a mission to save a loved one, things get even better.
David Ayer’s The Beekeeper is a good example of what fans want more of from Statham. The movie sees him as an ex-government agent who lives a quiet life, but when his loved ones are hurt, he goes on a rampage to avenge them. The film was a big hit, and a sequel will soon come out directed by Timo Tjahjanto. Earlier this year, Statham came out with another such feature, Shelter, directed by Ric Roman Waugh.
The film follows Statham as a former British government assassin, now living in self-imposed exile on a remote island, who rescues a young girl from a violent storm, setting off a chain of events that forces him out of seclusion to protect her from enemies tied to his past. While the movie presents Statham as a by-the-book lone wolf protecting a young girl, it was praised for its grounded, practical stunt work, lack of heavy CGI, and Statham’s surprisingly emotional performance, which took both fans and critics by surprise. And as it happens with many new movies, Shelter struggled to bring people to theaters, earning roughly $53 million at the box office against a $50 million production budget, but it became a huge success on streaming.

‘Shelter’ Continues Its Streaming Success
The feature came out on paid platforms in February soon after its theatrical release and then became free on streaming. The PVOD and streaming reach helped the movie, which has appeared on several top 10 lists. Shelter is nearing 200+ days on top 10 lists of platforms like Apple TV and Amazon; further, on platforms like Prime Video and Starz, it has spent over 100 days,. The film is currently at the #8 spot on Prime Video’s global top 10, standing tall among films like In the Grey, Project Hail Mary, The Runner, We Bury the Dead, and more.
