This week, Tyler Perry revived one of his decades-old franchises, Why Did I Get Married, with a new movie, Why Did I Get Married Again, which began streaming on Netflix on Wednesday.
Written and directed by Perry, this is the third movie in the comedy-drama franchise that originally centered on four couples who have been best friends since college. In the first film, the four couples go on a camping trip together, and all the trials and tribulations of their various marriages come to the surface.
In the new movie, the gang reunites because Angela and Marcus’s daughter, Jasmine (Armani Greer) is getting married. We meet a new generation of friends, including a new lead, played by Taraji P. Henson. Three of the original couples—Dianne and Terry (played by Sharon Leal and Tyler Perry), Angela and Marcus (played by Tasha Smith and Michael Jai White), and Sheila and Troy (Jill Scott and Lamman Rucker)—all return for the new movie. Hell, even Mike (Richard T. Jones) is there.
But there is one glaring absence: Dr. Patricia Agnew, played by pop music legend Janet Jackson.
Who did Janet Jackson play in the Why Did I Get Married movies?
In the first two Why Did I Get Married movies, Janet Jackson played Dr. Patricia Agnew, a psychologist who is married to an architect named Gavin (played by Malik Yoba). Patricia and Gavin are one of the four couples in the first movie who have been best friends since college.
Is Janet Jackson in Why Did I Get Married Again?
Sadly, Janet Jackson did not come back for Why Did I Get Married Again, and she is not featured in the Netflix movie—not even in a small, cameo appearance. Jackson’s on-screen husband, Gavin (played by Malik Yoba), also does not appear in the new movie. Sharp viewers might remember that Gavin was actually killed off at the end of the 2010 sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too. You gotta watch out for trucks!
Patricia’s absence is briefly noted at the beginning of the movie, when Angela laments that Pat isn’t coming to her daughter’s wedding. According to Marcus, Patricia is “busy” on a “lecture tour.”
But then Angela chimes in that she thinks the real reason Patricia isn’t coming because she’s still grieving her husband’s death, as well as the death of her son (who died before the first movie, and would have been the age of Angela and Marcus’s daughter, Jasmine).
Why isn’t Janet Jackson in Why Did I Get Married Again?
In an interview with The Culture Creators, Tyler Perry said that Jackson was not able to make time for the movie because she was busy with her residency in Las Vegas.
“Janet, at the time, she was doing residency in Vegas,” Perry said, when asked about her absence in the film. “So we couldn’t work out the time. But who knows what will happen in the future.”
That said, Jackson’s Vegas residency wrapped up on September 20, 2025. According to the website Production List, the first day of production on Why Did I Get Married Again was September 29, 2025. She didn’t even have time for a quick cameo? Something isn’t quite adding up.
That said, pre-production likely began while Jackson was still in Vegas, and maybe she didn’t want to appear in the movie if she couldn’t commit all the way. Or maybe Perry wasn’t offering her the salary she wanted. Or maybe she just didn’t feel like it!
We don’t know for sure. But we do know that Dr. Patricia was sorely missed.
