Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem star in Florian Zeller’s ‘Bunker’

Bunker, the latest film from Oscar winner Florian Zeller, had its world premiere Sept. 8 at the Venice Film Festival, recieving a 15-minute-plus standing ovation. The psychological thriller stars real-life spouses Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem as a couple whose seemingly picture-perfect marriage unravels, with the real-life spouses playing a husband and wife whose relationship fractures amid growing global uncertainty.

Here is everything to know about the Sony Pictures Classics release.

THE PLOT

The logline: “When an architect accepts a morally ambiguous project, building a survivalist bunker for a tech billionaire, his wife begins to question their 17-year marriage.”

John Malkovich Steve Buscemi Sam Rockwell

Zeller said the idea for the film came to him a few years ago after reading an article about a tech billionaire building a bunker in Hawaii. “I remember asking myself: ‘Does he know something we do not?’ It struck me as a fascinating paradox: the man who had built his fortune on connecting people was now isolating himself from the world. Aren’t we all, in some way, drifting apart like islands?” Zeller explained that while the film touches on contemporary themes, including “fear of the future, ecological threats, rising social inequality, and rampant individualism — but it does so through a deeply personal lens: a couple struggling with each other.”

THE CAST

In addition to Cruz and Bardem, the film stars Stephen Graham, Paul Dano, and Patrick Schwarzenegger.

THE CREATIVES

Florian Zeller wrote and directed the drama, leading a distinguished creative team behind the camera. The film features cinematography by Ben Smithard, editing by Yorgos Lamprinos, and production design by Alain Bainée. Sonia Grande serves as costume designer, with an original score composed by Volker Bertelmann.

AWARDS CHANCES

Initial reviews for Bunker have been poor to mixed. The Hollywood Reporter called the film “uneven and schematic,” Vulture labeled it a “crushing disappointment,” and its Metacritic score is a paltry 46. Critics generally agree that the performances — particularly from Cruz and Bardem — are strong, and considering the film’s Oscar-winning pedigree, it’s too early to completely write off Bunker. Zeller won Best Adapted Screenplay in 2021 for The Father, and both leads are past Academy Award recipients (Cruz for 2008’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Bardem for 2007’s No Country for Old Men). However, both actors might have better awards traction elsewhere. Cruz has two highly praised projects in La Bola Negra and The Invite, while Bardem earned rave reviews out of Cannes for The Beloved and will also return to action in Dune: Part 3.

RELEASE DATE

After premiering at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 8, the film heads to the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 14. Sony Pictures Classics plans to release Bunker for an awards-qualifying run later this year before a wider distribution in early 2027.
