“I’m struggling to this day to understand what I experienced.”
That’s what Nathan Fielder had to say about his new documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, You Can See Everything. The film was the surprise TBA screening that had been the talk of Telluride for days, and was under such intense secrecy that the title wasn’t revealed until the screening began and audiences’ cellphones were locked away for the film’s duration.
The nearly three-hour long doc follows Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and her partner Billy Evans in the weeks before she reported to prison in 2023 to serve her 11-year sentence for defrauding investors. Fielder actually moved in with the couple in her final days at home. (Watch the teaser below.)
Holmes and Evans, who share two young children, had been looking for a documentary to tell their story, and the project landed at A24 with Fielder and his co-director, Lance Oppenheim, behind the camera.
“I thought the story was fully told,” Fielder said in a post-screening Q&A moderated by Emma Stone. “What does she have to say now?”
But as Oppenheim revealed, “so much evolved organically.” The filmmakers were granted full access to the couple, who started interacting directly with Fielder, making him a character in the documentary he was shooting. To reveal more of what happens would spoil the film, but the twists were unpredictable even to the filmmakers, so much so that they all ended up debating how to interpret certain moments as they unfolded. “We were arguing all the time,” said Oppenheim of the crew.
Now that the top-secret project is out in the world, Fielder is looking forward to seeing how audiences react. “One of the things I’m genuinely excited about is for this movie to come out and for people to help me understand what I experienced,” he said. “Truly, to this day, I don’t quite know what I went through. ….Why did they want me there? That messed with my head.”
The film will be released in October — and no, Holmes and Evans haven’t seen it yet.
