When Det. Chester Lake left “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” at the end of Season 9, fans were left wondering why Adam Beach left the squad room so quickly, especially after seemingly being set up as one of the new regular new detectives the season prior.
The Canadian actor — who had already made a name for himself in feature films like Clint Eastwood’s “Flags of Our Fathers” and his Golden Globe-nominated role in HBO’s “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” — made his debut as Brooklyn SVU Detective Chester Lake in the Season 8 episode, “Outsider.” He was promoted to a series regular in Season 9, appearing in 21 episodes of the series. However, he never made it to Season 10.
Beach originally signed a one-year deal with an option to renew for a second. Ultimately, both the actor and the show’s production team mutually agreed not to exercise that option, leading to Chester getting written off in the Season 9 finale, “Cold,” where the character was arrested for killing a corrupt police officer. Even though his exit was abrupt, Beach always stuck to the narrative that there was no bad blood behind the scenes. “I very much enjoyed my year on ‘Law & Order: SVU,'” Beach told The Hollywood Reporter after his departure was announced. “Now I’m looking forward to new adventures.”
Adam Beach went on to become a series regular in the CBC drama Arctic Air
Dick Wolf — the mastermind behind the entire “Law & Order” universe — praised Beach’s work ethic, even though the actor only spent a short time with the franchise. “From the first day I met him on the set of ‘Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,’ I was knocked out by his commitment, dedication and total immersion in the film’s most crucial role,” Wolf said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “He did a terrific job this season on ‘SVU,’ and I look forward to working with him again in the near future.”
There’s a little more to the story. A few years later, Beach — who had taken on the lead role of maverick pilot Bobby Martin in CBC’s drama “Arctic Air” — candidly opened up about his “Law & Order: SVU” exit, revealing that he felt restricted by the procedural’s formula. “‘SVU’ is a show about the show; It’s about the solving of the crime,” Beach told Winnipeg Free Press. “You’re constantly doing the A-B-C of storylines that the cops are involved in. Here [in “Arctic Air”], each episode reveals each character’s personal traits as the show evolves through the 10 episodes. It’s a character-driven story.”
Regardless of how he felt about the “SVU” style of storytelling, there are those who still miss Chester Lake. On Reddit, many fans have expressed their appreciation of Beach’s role. “I really liked his character, it was cool having Native American representation,” wrote user Quirky–Cat. User bandakwin echoed a similar sentiment, saying, “He was one of my favorite characters. I thought he was showing excellent growth and development and then all of a sudden, he’s gone.”
