‘Furious’ instant Emmy predictions: Where the hit Hulu drama contends

Furious may have just ended its first season, but the Furious fervor isn’t going to die anytime soon. Although the series won’t contend until the winter awards cycle — Critics Choice, Golden Globes, and the guild awards, followed by the 2027 Emmy Awards — it’s never too soon to do a temperature check on its awards potential. After all, creator Liz Meriwether‘s last show, Dying for Sex, delivered with awards voters — earning nine Emmy nominations, including Best Limited Series, two Critics Choice nominations, and two Golden Globe nominations — along with a win for lead actress Michelle Williams.

Here’s our admittedly early look at where the serial killer drama might contend.

BEST DRAMA

Yes, Furious will enter a competitive landscape dominated by The Pitt, but Furious is assured of a nomination. Golden Globe voters will want to anoint the hit new drama, and critics have already planted their flag behind it, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 98% and 81 on Metacritic. Our leaderboards for the winter awards just opened, so watch this space for updates on its ranking.

BEST ACTRESS

Critics have uniformly singled out the performances of both Emmy Rossum (Alice) and Lola Petticrew (Catherine) as “excellent,” “haunting,” and “magnetic.” Assuming they submit as co-leads for their roles in the cat-and-mouse thriller, both should contend in the lead actress race.

Although she was never nominated for an Emmy Award (despite her name) for her nine seasons on Shameless, Rossum was recognized by the Critics Choice Association twice for her work on the show — in 2012 and again in 2014. Petticrew broke through with last year’s limited series Say Nothing, which earned the actress a Spirit Awards and BAFTA TV nod.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Quincy Tyler Bernstine as Nora WashingtonSarah Shatz/Disney

With her co-stars in lead, Quincy Tyler Bernstine should break through in the supporting race for her scene-stealing work as Nora Washington, the world-weary, witty head of the FBI sex crimes unit. “All three performances are sterling, but it’s Bernstine who has become a true breakout, memorable for her references to Balzac, Greek mythology, and Beckett (‘I went to a fancy school and I’m very smart,’ she tells Alice); her moments of unsentimental, hard-won social analysis (‘In my experience, being a victim of violence just makes you colder. More calculating’); and her Ernie-striped turtlenecks and flowered Hawaiian shirts,” wrote Rebecca Onion in Slate. “If Nora’s not on the screen, you long for a glimpse of her—that grizzle of gray hair, those vivid, expressive eyes.”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Scoot McNairy as Det. Danny KellySarah Shatz/Disney

While the series is all about the women, Scoot McNairy delivers as Danny Kelly, Alice’s former NYPD colleague, balancing his feelings for her with trying to solve the case. He’s been part of the Actor Awards-nominated ensembles of Argo (which won), 12 Years A Slave, and A Complete Unknown, and was nominated for an International Emmy for Best Actor for Narcos: Mexico.

As for Jake Lacy, the ex-boyfriend we hate to hate, he was nommed in 2022 for The White Lotus, but didn’t make the cut for this year’s All Her Fault. If voting bodies catch a case of Furious fever, Lacy could come along for the ride.
