Master Chief’s mission on Netflix is officially coming to an end. After a surprisingly successful stint on the streamer, the live-action video game adaptation Halo is set to depart Netflix in the United States on October 1st, 2026, following earlier international departures.
As you may recall, Halo took quite the journey to get to Netflix in the first place. Following a rocky two-season run, the ambitious sci-fi series was unexpectedly axed by its home network. Shortly after, Paramount Global opted to license the show out to a rival, leading to Halo heading to Netflix in select regions following its Paramount+ cancelation.
It wasn’t long before US subscribers got in on the action, too. We broke the news that the series was officially joining Netflix in the United States in October of 2025.
Now, exactly twelve months after it touched down, the licensing window is closing. A removal notice is currently showing on the Halo page in the US indicating that your last day to watch is September 30th, with the title officially departing at midnight on October 1st, 2026.
This departure shouldn’t come as a massive shock to our eagle-eyed readers. These non-exclusive, third-party licensing deals from Paramount are usually strictly short-term. In fact, we previously covered that the series already left Netflix in international regions at the end of February 2026 after only a few months on the platform. Once Halo departs Netflix US, it will default back to being an exclusive on Paramount+, which remains the permanent streaming home for the series.
How well did Halo perform on Netflix?
When Halo first dropped on Netflix, it shot straight into the daily top 10 charts, finding a massive new audience that had entirely missed its initial run. Thanks to Netflix’s biannual engagement reports, we now have a clear picture of exactly how many people tuned in during the show’s run.
Here is the official breakdown of Halo’s viewership on Netflix across 2025 and the first half of 2026 (H1):

As the data shows, Season 1 was a solid hit for a licensed title, racking up nearly 20 million views in total. However, the completion rate leaves a lot to be desired. Viewership plummeted massively going into Season 2, which only managed to pull in 3.7 million total views. That steep drop-off indicates that while the show’s arrival on Netflix generated plenty of initial curiosity, a large chunk of the audience simply didn’t stick around to finish the fight.
What about Season 3?
Naturally, the show’s initial surge in the top 10 sparked a wave of fan campaigns hoping Netflix would step in, wave its magic wand, and save the show for a third season.
However, as we previously reported, despite Halo finding a new lease on life on Netflix, it almost certainly won’t come back for Season 3. The sheer budget required to produce the sci-fi epic, combined with the complex web of rights split between Microsoft/Xbox, Amblin Television, and Paramount—not to mention the sharp decline in viewership for Season 2—makes a revival virtually impossible. Netflix simply licensed the existing two seasons to bolster its library, not to take over production.
Still, video game fans shouldn’t despair completely. Netflix is leaning heavily into the gaming space, and there have been plenty of rumors and discussions regarding a larger Netflix and Xbox deal. With a live-action Gears of War adaptation officially in the works, and hopes for properties like Warcraft or Diablo down the line, Netflix and Microsoft are far from done working together.
