Last week’s all-new episode of HBO‘s Lanterns ended with Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) putting on his iconic Green Lantern suit to hurtle across the universe to meet with none other than Thaal Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen). Sinestro was behind bars and still Hal needed his help researching a dangerous new threat: a living Manhunter holed up in Rushville, Nebraska.
So far, Lanterns has played out like a classic mystery box show. There are multiple timelines, hidden agendas, and even literal mysterious boxes. The two biggest mysteries at the heart of Lanterns: Who kills Hal Jordan in 2026? And who in 2016 Rushville is secretly an evil, shapeshifting alien?
In the 2026 timeline, we also get to watch Hal bristle at having to train the heroic John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), a brave young man tapped to be his backup. In his one-on-one with old mentor Sinestro, the older alien gets to the meat of Hal’s distaste; he’s worried that the John isn’t his backup, but younger, fitter replacement.
Will Hal Jordan and John Stewart overcome their differences to work together? Will the Manhunter reveal themselves? Will the married Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald) ever acknowledge that she and Hal totally have a vibe?
