Will Smith has certainly made some interesting creative choices in his career; he has admitted that in addition to a lead role in Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist Western Django Unchained, he turned down the role of Neo in The Matrix. He turned down the Wachowskis’ sci-fi masterpiece partially because he thought their pitch wasn’t convincing, and partially because he wanted to star in Wild Wild West, a steampunk Western directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. That movie bombed at the box office, but it wasn’t the only time Smith headlined a big-budget movie that left critics and audiences scratching their heads. In 2013, he starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth, which holds a 12% score on Rotten Tomatoes. But one of Smith’s most offbeat movies is an animated movie aimed at children that was inspired heavily by The Godfather.
If this combination seems strange to you, you aren’t alone. The late critic Roger Ebert was similarly confused by the movie, writing in his review, “It’s strange that a kid-oriented film would be based on a parody of a 1972 gangster movie for adults.” The movie was released in 2004, and was reasonably successful at the box office, grossing $375 million worldwide against a reported budget of $75 million. Along with Smith, it also featured Renée Zellweger, Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, and even the one-two punch of Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro.

Yes, Scorsese had a voice role on his acting resume years before he played a small supporting character in this year’s The Mandalorian and Grogu. We’re talking, of course, about the DreamWorks hit Shark Tale. Not until 2011 would an A-list movie star voice the lead character in an animated movie inspired by a New Hollywood classic. But that film, Rango, ended up winning an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature category. Shark Tale, on the other hand, holds a 35% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus calls it “derivative and full of pop-culture jokes.” Shark Tale is currently streaming on Peacock in the United States, but audiences who haven’t yet experienced its peak-2000s comedy — this was the era of Shrek — must do so before it is removed from the platform on September 1.
