What Time Does ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look’ Drop on Netflix Today?

The wait is finally over, gamers. Today is the day Rockstar Games is set to break the internet (but hopefully not Netflix), and they are doing it in an unprecedented collaboration with Netflix. After a staggering 4,727 days since Grand Theft Auto V first released back in September 2013—along with over a decade of anticipation, rumors, and waiting—Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look officially drops today on Netflix, giving us an extended preview of what’s to come ahead of the game’s November release.

If you missed our previous coverage breaking down why Netflix is hosting the GTA 6 preview, we noted how this perfectly aligns with the streamer’s push to “eventize” their platform. Following the massive success of the GTA: The Trilogy mobile ports on Netflix Games, Netflix has secured a lucrative six-hour exclusive window for this preview before it hits YouTube and other platforms. It’s a guaranteed viewership magnet.

But for those of you who have your snacks ready and your Netflix accounts logged in, you’re probably wondering exactly when you can hit play.

Here is your comprehensive guide to what time the GTA VI preview drops on Netflix, alongside Rockstar’s response to the recent wave of gameplay leaks, and the official streaming guidelines for creators.

What Time is GTA VI: An Extended Look on Netflix?

Unlike Netflix’s standard 12:00 AM Pacific Time drops for original series and movies, this is a special synchronized global event.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will debut on Netflix at 3:00 PM ET today, August 27th.

Here is our handy timezone guide so you know exactly when the preview unlocks in your region:

How Long Will GTA VI: An Extended Look Be?

Our understanding is that the special look will be 26 minutes in length.

The Elephant in the Room: The “CyberLeak” Controversy & Rockstar’s Response

You can’t talk about today’s massive preview event without addressing the massive wave of leaks that hit the internet this past week.

Over the last several days, a hacker/leaking group known online as “CyberLeak” posted over a dozen extended gameplay clips and reportedly leaked the entire map of the State of Leonida. According to reports, the group claimed their motive was to protest rumors of Rockstar shifting to a “digital-only” release strategy and alleged anti-consumer practices.

Despite the noise, the leaks have had no impact on today’s Netflix release schedule. However, Rockstar Games did officially address the situation.

In a letter posted to their social channels yesterday, Rockstar broke their traditional silence. They noted that having the Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in such a manner was “heartbreaking for our team” and “obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time”.

Despite the unfortunate spoilers out in the wild, Rockstar is pushing forward with today’s Netflix drop, promising that they are “determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve”.

Oh, and they quietly dropped a massive bombshell in that same letter: they urged fans to wait to experience the game for themselves when it officially releases on November 19.

More GTA VI Previews Dropping Today

Netflix isn’t the only place you’ll be hearing about Vice City today. Alongside the video drop, a massive wave of written hands-on previews from various gaming outlets and publications are due to hit the web today. In fact, the coverage has already started. If you need some reading material to hold you over until 3:00 PM, Dazed published an exclusive deep dive yesterday, exploring the “unparalleled world” Rockstar has built. That said, various YouTubers will be dropping intel throughout the day, plus you can guarantee outlets like IGN will also have a lot to say about the upcoming game.

Can I Stream or React to the Preview on Twitch/YouTube?

Yes, but there are strict rules in place. Rockstar Games has issued specific guidance for content creators regarding today’s drop:

“Once Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look debuts on Netflix, creators are free to share their reaction content across social and video platforms. To clarify, you are allowed to livestream the extended look starting at 3:00 PM ET on August 27th, providing you adhere to platform-specific guidance.”

Crucially: You may not simply restream or repost the unedited video in full without context or commentary. If you are going to stream it, make sure you are actively reacting or providing commentary to avoid any DMCA takedowns!

I Can’t Find GTA VI: An Extended Look on Netflix After The Time?

If the timer above has lapsed and you can’t find the GTA page on Netflix, or it’s not giving you the play option, you’ll need to quickly refresh Netflix. With millions of gamers rushing to Netflix at the exact same time, the servers are going to be under a heavy load. If the clock strikes 3:00 PM ET and you still don’t see the option to play GTA VI: An Extended Look, don’t panic. Here is how to force Netflix to refresh:

• The Profile Trick (Fastest Method): From the Netflix home screen, navigate to the menu and select “Switch Profiles.” Pick a different profile on your account, let it load, and then switch back to your main profile. This forces the homepage UI to refresh.
• Hard Refresh (Web Browsers): If you’re watching on a computer, don’t just click refresh. Do a “hard refresh” to clear the page cache. Press Ctrl + F5 on Windows or Cmd + Shift + R on Mac.
• Force Quit the App (Consoles, TVs & Mobile): Simply backing out to your console or TV dashboard often isn’t enough, as the app stays suspended in the background. Manually force close the Netflix app on your PS5, Xbox, Smart TV, or phone, and then launch it again.
• Play Something Else Briefly: Click into another show or movie (maybe an episode of Stranger Things or a quick stand-up special). Let it play for five seconds, then back out to the main menu. This can trigger the app to sync with Netflix’s servers.
• Log Out and Log Back In: It’s a bit of a hassle, but signing out of your account entirely and logging back in will force a complete reset of your dashboard.
