As part of Netflix’s massive UK slate unveil at the Edinburgh TV Festival today, we finally got some highly anticipated updates on How to Kill Your Family, the upcoming dark comedy-thriller series based on Bella Mackie’s smash-hit bestselling novel.

With cameras gearing up to roll this autumn (we’re hearing a mid-October start in London with a stop in Spain!), Netflix has rounded out the main cast for the eight-episode (60 minutes each) series, adding a major Hollywood heavyweight to star alongside Anya Taylor-Joy. The series is currently thought to wrap in mid-February 2027.

Here is our updated preview of everything you need to know about How to Kill Your Family, including the new cast additions, filming locations, and when you can expect to see it on your screens.

Who is starring in How to Kill Your Family?

Today, Netflix announced that Academy Award nominee Clive Owen (Children of Men, Monsieur Spade) is officially joining the cast. He will be playing Simon Artemis, Grace’s ruthless billionaire father. Also joining the cast in undisclosed roles are Orlando Norman (Wreck) and David Shields (Masters of the Air, Black Mirror).

What is the plot of How to Kill Your Family?

Described by Netflix as “ambitious in scale, beautiful, filmic, and murderous,” the series promises to be a deliciously dark tale of revenge. Our protagonist is described as a modern-day Gatsby, Tom Ripley, and Lorelai Lee (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) rolled into one.

Here is the official logline for the series:

“Grace is the forgotten child of Simon Artemis, a merciless billionaire. After a heartbreaking rejection, Grace decides to exact revenge. But will this deadly scheme take even more from Grace than she’s already lost?”

And an extended synopsis provided by Netflix:

“Grace is the product of an affair Simon claims not to remember, which left Grace and her mom to fend for themselves. When her mother dies and Grace is rejected by the people who should love her, she transforms her anger into something useful — killing off her estranged extended family via morbidly creative means. Soon, Grace is clawing her way toward revenge and a hefty inheritance. But her mission pulls her away from what she really needs.”

Who is behind the series?

The 8-episode series is being produced by Sid Gentle Films, the acclaimed production company behind the hit BBC America series Killing Eve. Anya Taylor-Joy’s own banner, LadyKiller, is also producing. Emma Moran (Extraordinary) serves as the series creator and lead writer.

Directing duties will be split between Josephine Bornebusch (Baby Reindeer, Slow Horses) and Tom Kingsley (Ghosts, This Is Going to Hurt). Executive producers include Sally Woodward Gentle, Lee Morris, Lizzie Rusbridger, Pat Lees, Emma Moran, and Anya Taylor-Joy. Andrew Chapman serves as Line Producer, with Nige Watson serving as Series Producer and Amber Cowan as Production Manager.

When will How to Kill Your Family release on Netflix?

Netflix has not yet announced a firm release date for the series.

However, given that filming is wrapping up in February 2027, the series will need several months of post-production. It’s a safe bet that we could be looking at a Late 2027 or Early 2028 release window.

We’ll be keeping this preview updated as more news, casting announcements, and first-look photos drop.
