This Cartoon Gave The Gods Of Greek Mythology An X-Men-Style Spin

If you grew up in the mid-2000s and regularly tuned into the Discovery Kids channel, chances are you stumbled across a niche animated series that took ancient Greek mythology, superheroes, and teen angst, and threw them all into a blender. That show was the cleverly titled “Class of the Titans” — clearly a cute riff on “Clash of the Titans” — and imagined the demigod descendants of the Greek gods as high school students with superpowers. “Class of the Titans” is a Canadian production that originally premiered in late 2005 on the now-defunct Teletoon, before migrating to Discovery Kids in North America in 2006.

The animated series — which ran for two seasons and 52 episodes — is about the ancient villain Cronus escaping his Tartarus prison. To stop him, seven teenagers — all descendants of Greek heroes — are brought to Olympus High School in New Olympia. Under the tutelage of the gods themselves, the young heroes learn to harness their powers while fending off a variety of mythical monsters. The teens are led by the stoic Jason-descendant, Jay (Kirby Morrow), alongside the sharpshooting hunter Atlanta (Sarah Edmondson), musclebound Herry (Ty Olsson), cynical warrior Archie (Sam Vincent), psychic martial artist Theresa (Kelly Sheridan), tech-savvy strategist Odie (Doron Bell), and narcissistic model Neil (Ted Cole).

If that setup is giving you Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters vibes, that’s because “Class of the Titans” is very much in the same vein as Marvel’s superhero ensemble cartoons, such as “X-Men: The Animated Series” and “X-Men: Evolution.” Its DNA even mirrors recent shows, like Disney’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” But much like the underrated “X-Men: Evolutions,” the series paired high school drama and adolescent growing pains with world-saving missions.

You can find every episode of Class of the Titans on Prime Video and YouTube

Because the show pretty much flew under the radar, you will not find any mainstream reviews for it — it doesn’t even have an official Rotten Tomatoes score or critic reviews. However, it still maintains a dedicated cult following online. Over on Reddit, user u/ImmaterialAsset shared, “I hold this show very close to my heart and still hope for a revival,” adding that “its biggest strength is it had great characters who had interesting dynamics with each other.” Meanwhile, u/Low_Screen2574 called it a childhood favorite, writing, “I loved it so much as a child and I still do.”

On IMDb, the series has a 7.1 rating, with one user giving it a perfect score. “The action, the adventure, the drama, the hint of romance here and there,” wrote user kitty751_7. “It’s, to me, an amazing show.” It even earned some love from Down Under. “Class of the Titans” made BuzzFeed’s countdown of iconic ABC Kids programming (where it aired in Australia), landing the No. 5 spot on its ranking. If you love TV shows about Greek mythology, superheroes, or just love discovering cartoons that are lost deep-cut gems, you can stream “Class of the Titans” on Prime Video. Alternately, you can find every single episode on YouTube.
