Beef vs DTF St. Louis: Emmys Best Limited Series odds and history

We’re in the final stretch before final voting begins for the 2026 Emmys. One of the year’s most unpredictable races is Best Limited Series, where the last three winners have been about as slam-dunk as it gets — Adolescence, Baby Reindeer, and the original season of Beef. The second installment of Beef is now the favorite to win it again, but HBO‘s DTF St. Louis is coming on strong.

All Her Fault, Love Story, and The Beast in Me round out the field, but the odds make it clear this is really a two-show race — Beef and DTF St. Louis are combining for better than 93% of the vote between them.

Let’s break down who’s out front in each of the closest races — and why there’s one category in particular that should tell us the winner before the envelope opens on Sept. 14.

Lead Acting Prizes: Advantage Beef

Carey Mulligan leads Movie/Limited Actress, comfortably ahead of Sarah Snook (All Her Fault) in second place. Oscar Isaac is even further ahead in Movie/Limited Actor, with Matthew Rhys (The Beast in Me) a distant second. DTF St. Louis isn’t on the board in either race — the show didn’t submit an actor as a lead.

Winning Best Limited Series without also winning a lead acting race rarely happens. The last time it did was 2022, when The White Lotus took the top prize but Michael Keaton (Dopesick) and Amanda Seyfried (The Dropout) won lead acting trophies. The White Lotus didn’t have anyone in the lead races at all that year, the same spot DTF St. Louis is in now. Every winner since has come with at least one lead acting win attached: Beef swept both races in 2023, Richard Gadd won Best Actor for Baby Reindeer in 2024, and Stephen Graham won Best Actor for Adolescence in 2025. If that pattern holds, Beef is bringing something to this race that DTF St. Louis structurally can’t match.

DTF St. Louis counters with a stacked bench

Where DTF St. Louis makes up ground is in the supporting categories, and it does so with depth. Linda Cardellini leads Movie/Limited Supporting Actress, with Joy Sunday also nominated for the show — two of the six slots in the category. David Harbour leads Movie/Limited Supporting Actor, with Jason Bateman and Richard Jenkins rounding out three total DTF St. Louis nominees there. Beef has one nominee in each category, Youn Yuh-jung and Charles Melton, both running second (Beef‘s Cailee Spaeny snub was brutal and telling). Five supporting slots is a lot of TV Academy goodwill on one ballot, even before anyone weighs Cardellini’s or Harbour’s individual odds.

The directing split isn’t the death sentence it looks like

DTF St. Louis leads Movie/Limited Directing, while Beef splits its own vote across two submissions: “Oh, The Comfort, The Inexpressible Comfort” and “It Will Stay This Way And You Will Obey.” It’s tempting to chalk DTF St. Louis‘ lead up to Beef cannibalizing itself. But Beef has been in exactly this spot before, and it didn’t cost the show a thing. In 2023, its first season split its directing submission the same way — Lee Sung Jin for “Figures of Light,” Jake Schreier for “The Great Fabricator” — putting it in the same boat as Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, the year’s other double nominee. Fleishman Is in Trouble and Prey, the two other contenders, each landed just one nominee. Beef won anyway, with Lee Sung Jin taking the trophy. A divided submission isn’t disqualifying, which makes DTF St. Louis‘ directing lead look more like real strength than a walkover.

Beef flips the script in Limited/Movie Writing, leading DTF St. Louis in a category with no splits.

A second season vs. a freshman debut

Beef is trying to do something the Emmys have rewarded before, just not consistently: win Best Limited Series for a second, unrelated season of the same anthology. American Crime Story pulled it off when The People v. O.J. Simpson won in 2016 and then again in 2018 with The Assassination of Gianni Versace. Fargo didn’t — its first season won in 2014, and none of the four seasons since has come close to a repeat. The White Lotus split the difference, winning for Season 1 in 2022 before losing for Season 2 to Beef the following year. There’s no clear rule here — being a known quantity hasn’t reliably helped or hurt a returning anthology. DTF St. Louis being a first-timer, meanwhile, isn’t really a disadvantage; it’s the category norm. Most Best Limited Series winners are shows in their only eligible season.

The category that spoils the ending

Here’s the twist: this race may not stay a mystery until the main telecast. Best Movie/Limited Casting is handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys the weekend before, and it has correctly called the eventual Best Limited Series winner every year since 2020 — Watchmen, The Queen’s Gambit, The White Lotus, Beef, Baby Reindeer, and Adolescence all won both. Going back 15 years, that correlation has only broken twice: in 2019, when When They See Us won casting but Chernobyl took the series prize, and in 2011, when Mildred Pierce won casting while Downton Abbey won the top award. This year makes the comparison especially clean: the Casting field is the exact same five shows as the Limited Series field — Beef, DTF St. Louis, Love Story, All Her Fault, and The Beast in Me. Beef currently leads that Casting race by a wide margin, too. If that holds at Creative Arts, you can probably lock them in the following week as well. If DTF St. Louis pulls an upset, look for them to pull another one on Sept. 14.
