There are a handful of up-and-coming filmmakers who are quickly establishing themselves as the future of cinema. Jane Schoenbrun is one of them.
Since the release of their critically-acclaimed film I Saw the TV Glow, all eyes have been on Schoenbrun’s next move. Now, the time has finally come for audiences to experience Schoenbrun’s next film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.
Unlike any film you’ll ever see, the film stars Hannah Einbinder as Kris, a filmmaker developing a new entry in a long-running, yet slowly fading horror film series. As Kris falls down the rabbit hole as she prepares for the film, she becomes infatuated with Billy (Gillian Anderson), the “final girl” of the first film that defined the franchise.
The film premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews, praising Schoenbrun’s subversion of horror and its tropes. In an interview with Vulture, Schoenbrun discussed their personal philosophy to filmmaking, “I’m working in these mediums that are clearly indebted to commercial power structures. And the more I do it, the more I’m like, That’s the core tension. I love television. I love American movies.”
“And I also want to destroy them. I see them as prisons as much as they’re spaces of emancipation,” they added.
With many of us eager to see the film as soon as possible, here’s what you should know about how to watch Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.
What is Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma about?

Great question… we’re eager to figure that out too!
While the trailer initially presents itself as a story about filmmaker’s obsession with a former horror ingénue, the film is a meta deconstruction of the genre itself. In DECIDER’S review, Siddhant Adlakha wrote that the film intends to capture “knowing and feeling all at once, a sensation it translates as an occasionally-overwhelming sensory experience, and bloody, rollicking good time.”
We for one are so excited to see Schoenbrnun pay homage to classic horror all while executing their own vision of horror amid its current resurgence.
