Contemporary audiences may be discovering The Odyssey through Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster adaptation of Homer’s work, but filmmakers have been channeling the epic poem almost as long as there have been films.
In 1905, cinema pioneer Georges Méliès made The Mysterious Island. In it, Méliès himself plays Odysseus.
Since then, there have been mostly-faithful versions starring Kirk Douglas, Ralph Fiennes and Armand Assante.
Less standard interpretations have included a film by Stanley Kubrick, another by Joel and Ethan Coen and a third by Palme d’Or winner Theo Angelopoulos.
