‘Ransom Canyon’ Season 3: Netflix Renewal Status & What to Expect

Netflix has yet to renew Ransom Canyon for a third season, but Season 2 certainly leaves plenty of stories waiting to be told. Unlike many finales that rely on a huge cliffhanger, Season 2 wraps up several narratives while opening the door to plenty of new ones. It could work as a series finale if Netflix decides to pull the plug, but it leaves more than enough on the table to make a third season worthwhile.

As with most Netflix originals, the show’s future will likely come down to its viewership numbers during its first few weeks on the platform. However, it’s clear the creators already have a roadmap.
Showrunner April Blair has spoken to numerous outlets about the future of the show, noting that the writer’s room is already drafting ideas for future episodes. In an interview with TVLine, Blair teased: “In Season 3 we’re going to hit other pockets of building out this world… There’s definitely a big event in Season 3 that Claire in some form will need to show up for. We’re currently in the writer’s room for Season 3, but we’re just at the beginning.”

Blair also teased a blast from the past in her Decider interview: “In Season 3, someone very important in Lucas and Kit’s past comes back. This season we got to meet Quinn’s mom, and really get under the hood of that. And we even built even more of a story between Staten and his dad… we’re going to keep trying to build out people’s worlds.”

Where does Ransom Canyon go in Season 3?

Season 2 kicks off a six-month time jump that shakes up the board: Staten has lost the Double K Ranch to his father, Sam; Quinn returns with a new fiancé; Yancy and Ellie are expecting a baby while fending off Yancy’s ex-wife, Sidney; and Lauren and Lucas fall apart as Kit enters the picture.

By the finale, the dust settles. Quinn turns down Oliver’s proposal to build a future at Double K with Staten. Yancy exposes Sidney’s schemes, only to discover his “worthless” land is actually rich in oil. Ellie survives Sidney’s attack but asks Yancy for space to rebuild trust. Lauren chooses Kit, leaving Lucas to start over, and Sam finally seems ready to repair his relationship with Staten.

If Netflix orders another trip to the canyon, here is what we want to see based on the groundwork laid in Season 2:

A New Era for Double K, Staten, and the Kirklands

For two seasons, Ransom Canyon built Staten and Quinn’s romance around distance, bad timing, and missed opportunities. With the hidden letter revealed and Oliver out of the picture, Season 3 doesn’t need to look for excuses to separate them. Instead, the show can finally explore what their life looks like as an actual couple—balancing Quinn’s music festival plans with Staten’s efforts to rebuild Double K.

Rebuilding the ranch will take work, especially after Sam’s divisive decisions alienated longtime employees. However, rather than making Sam the villain again and undoing their hard-earned reconciliation, the show should introduce a fresh antagonist—perhaps a rival developer or someone eyeing the town’s newly discovered oil.
This is also the perfect time to expand the Kirkland family tree. With Howey’s role on High Potential reduced, Levi deserves a much larger storyline, exploring his childhood and why he stayed away so long. Furthermore, introducing Staten and Levi’s mother could be the missing piece to fully understanding the choices that shaped both Sam and Staten.

Black Gold, Broken Trust, and Sidney’s Revenge

Yancy has never been able to rely on money, but the finale’s twist changes everything: the oil on Cap’s property is real, making him the owner of Ransom Canyon’s most valuable land. But sudden wealth rarely solves problems on television. We could easily see the return of the geological surveyor who helped Yancy manipulate the records—he didn’t risk prison for free, and he’ll likely want a cut.

This newfound wealth also complicates his relationship with Ellie. After Sidney nearly killed her and their unborn daughter, Isabella is Ellie’s only priority. Rather than rushing a reunion, Season 3 should make Yancy earn his way back into Ellie’s life, proving he can provide safety, not just money. And let’s not forget—Sidney is still out there. Refusing to neatly wrap up her storyline was Season 2’s smartest move. Once she catches wind of the oil money, she’ll have every reason to return to Ransom Canyon for revenge.

The Messy Fallout for Lauren, Kit, and Lucas

The finale unites Lauren and Kit, but it doesn’t erase the collateral damage. Lucas is still Kit’s younger brother, and Sheriff Dan has already raised red flags about the health of the new relationship. Their story is just getting started, and it’s bound to get messier.

Lucas, meanwhile, has the most interesting trajectory heading into Season 3. Showrunner April Blair has confirmed that Lucas and Lauren are the intended “endgame,” but a reunion needs to wait. Staten’s finale advice to Lucas—encouraging him to stop living in regret—sets up a journey of self-discovery. Whether he heads to college, works at a different ranch, or leaves town altogether, Lucas needs to find out who he is outside of the relationship that defined him. If he and Lauren eventually find their way back to each other, it has to be on new terms.

Expanding the Town & Sheriff Dan’s Time to Shine

With Quinn’s music festival putting Ransom Canyon on the map and oil discoveries shifting the local economy, the town itself is changing. This expansion requires new blood and new conflicts, ensuring the show isn’t just recycling old drama.

It’s also high time Sheriff Dan gets a storyline of his own. He spent most of Season 2 reacting to everyone else’s problems. His chemistry with Quinn’s sister, Angie, was obvious from the start, but it never had room to breathe. Season 3 should elevate their romance and give Angie a more prominent role in the community beyond just supporting Quinn.
