The box-office success of Christopher Nolan‘s latest epic, The Odyssey, has reignited interest in Greek mythology in cinema. The 2004 film Troy, which Nolan nearly directed as his first large-scale project, is witnessing a spike in viewership on streaming, as is a 1997 television limited series adaptation of Homer‘s epic, produced by Francis Ford Coppola. Audiences hooked on mythological movies can now look forward to another big-budget Hollywood adaptation of a Greek story, which is on its way to Peacock. The movie in question was a major box-office hit that spawned a sequel, even though it didn’t exactly receive positive reviews.
It was released in 2010, just a few months after James Cameron‘s Avatar altered the landscape of the film industry. Because of Avatar‘s record-breaking success, Warner Bros. decided to perform a hasty post-production 3D conversion on the 2010 epic. This became one of its most criticized aspects, and the film is still held up as an example of 3D done poorly. Interestingly, the movie was headlined by Avatar star Sam Worthington, who had previously starred in Terminator Salvation. Combined, his three introductory movies in Hollywood grossed a total of more than $3.5 billion.

The 2010 film, of course, is Clash of the Titans. Based on the myth of Perseus, the movie was directed by Louis Leterrier, with Liam Neeson playing Zeus, Ralph Fiennes as Hades, Danny Huston as Poseidon, and Luke Evans as Apollo. The supporting cast was rounded out by Gemma Arterton, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alexa Davalos. Clash of the Titans was positioned as a remake of the cult classic 1981 version, which is now remembered for its stop-motion animated sequences. The 2010 film employed state-of-the-art visual effects instead. The movie now holds a 27% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “An obviously affectionate remake of the 1981 original, Louis Leterrier’s Clash of the Titans doesn’t offer enough visual thrills to offset the deficiencies of its script.” Despite the poor reception, Clash of the Titans grossed nearly $500 million worldwide against a reported budget of $125 million.
