After smashing past two new milestones in two successive days, Christopher Nolan‘s latest epic, The Odyssey, is poised to hit the coveted $500 million mark at the worldwide box office in its second weekend. The movie shattered projections in its massive debut frame, grossing around $265 million worldwide. This was the biggest global debut of Nolan’s career, ahead of even The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. The Odyssey is Nolan’s most expensive movie, tied with his third Batman feature; it comes with a reported price tag of $250 million. In its first few days of release, the movie overtook the lifetime global hauls of the epic films Exodus: Gods and Kings and Blade Runner 2049. And now, in less than one week of release, The Odyssey has surpassed the lifetime global haul of another movie based on Greek mythology.
The movie in question was released in 2014, serving as a standalone sequel to one of the biggest surprise blockbusters of the 2000s. The original was directed by Nolan’s contemporary, Zack Snyder; the two went on to collaborate on Man of Steel, which Snyder directed and Nolan executive produced. Interestingly, Snyder’s movie was developed at the same time at Warner Bros. as the fellow Greek mythological epic Troy, which Nolan was attached to. Snyder’s hit, 300, ultimately grossed around $470 million worldwide while Nolan’s first studio movie, Batman Begins, made approximately $375 million globally a year earlier. A sequel to 300 was a long time coming, however.

300: Rise of an Empire was directed by Noam Murro, with Sullivan Stapleton and Eva Green playing the leading roles. With a reported budget of $110 million, the film grossed around $340 million worldwide. The movie received mixed reviews, with most viewers agreeing that Snyder’s original was a better film. It now holds a 45% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “It’s bound to hit some viewers as an empty exercise in stylish gore, and despite a gonzo starring performance from Eva Green, 300: Rise of an Empire is a step down from its predecessor.” The Odyssey, on the other hand, has grossed more than $350 million worldwide so far; the movie holds a “Certified Fresh” 94% critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
