Brenda Fricker, the Oscar-winning actress who played opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot, has died at the age of 81 following a period of ill health. Fricker became the first Irish woman to win an Oscar, receiving the Best Supporting Actress statuette for her fierce portrayal as the devoted mother of Christy Brown (Day-Lewis) in 1989’s My Left Foot. While she would claim that the Oscar win ultimately kept her from getting more roles, Fricker did manage to rack up credits in the following decades across a range of genres, shifting from prestige dramas to beloved studio comedies. Here’s a look at her most memorable work.

My Left Foot (1989)

Fricker’s signature performance came in Jim Sheridan’s acclaimed drama, where she delivered a masterclass in maternal fierce devotion as Mrs. Brown. Fricker was widely unknown to Hollywood when she took on the role of the mother to poet and author Christy Brown, played by fellow Best Actor winner Daniel Day-Lewis.

Her character’s unconditional love and stubborn belief served as the emotional bedrock for the film, leading to one of the most memorable underdog triumphs in Oscar history. Making history as the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award, Fricker captured the Best Supporting Actress trophy by prevailing over an incredibly formidable field of nominees: Anjelica Huston (Enemies, A Love Story), Lena Olin (Enemies, A Love Story), Julia Roberts (Steel Magnolias), and Dianne Wiest (Parenthood).

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)

For a generation of moviegoers, Fricker is most instantly recognized as the mysterious Central Park Pigeon Lady in Chris Columbus’s blockbuster holiday sequel. Tasked with stepping into a high-profile Hollywood studio film, she brought unexpected warmth and emotional loneliness to the character. Her rooftop conversation with Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister about heartbreak and trust secured her a permanent place in pop culture history.

So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993)

Fricker showcased her knack for deadpan comedic timing when she stepped into the world of Mike Myers in this cult classic romantic comedy. Playing May Mackenzie, the fiercely protective and eccentric Scottish mother of Myers’ character Charlie, Fricker stole every single scene she was in. Whether she was obsessing over tabloid conspiracy theories or aggressively flirting with her son’s friend, Fricker leaned entirely into the absurd comedy.

Angels in the Outfield (1994)

In Disney’s family sports comedy, Fricker brought her maternal warmth and grounded empathy to the role of Maggie Nelson, a patient and deeply caring foster home caretaker. Tasked with looking after young Roger (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and JP (Milton Davis Jr.), Fricker served as the emotional anchor of the movie.
