Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey boasts one of the most decorated casts ever assembled, but when the Actor Awards (formerly known as the SAG Awards) come calling, only eight of those performers will be able to compete for the show’s top ensemble prize.
Per the film’s billing block, the ensemble-eligible eight are Matt Damon (Odysseus), Tom Holland (Telemachus), Anne Hathaway (Penelope), Robert Pattinson (Antinous), Lupita Nyong’o (Helen and Clytemnestra), Samantha Morton (Circe), Zendaya (Athena), and Charlize Theron (Calypso).
Under Actor Awards rules, a performer must receive single-card billing in a film’s main titles to be eligible for the Best Film Ensemble category, with exceptions granted only at the discretion of the awards committee for “special, unusual, or non-billing” cases. The rest of The Odyssey‘s sprawling company — including John Leguizamo (Eumaeus), Jon Bernthal (Menelaus), Himesh Patel (Eurylochus), Bill Irwin (the Cyclops), Elliot Page (Sinon), Benny Safdie (Agamemnon), Corey Hawkins (Polybus), and Mia Goth (Melantho) — will be on the sidelines when it comes to the ensemble race, since they fall outside the credited top-line cast that determines eligibility for the category.
That doesn’t mean the rest of the cast is shut out of Actor Awards contention altogether. Individual performers from that group remain eligible to compete in the supporting and lead acting categories, and given the depth of this ensemble, that path is a realistic one.
Nolan’s eight-person top-line ensemble is stacked with previous Oscar winners and nominees: Damon, Hathaway, Nyong’o, and Theron all have Academy Awards on their mantels, while Holland is a BAFTA winner, Zendaya is an Emmy and Golden Globe winner, and Morton is a two-time Oscar nominee.
Sideways, at just four credited actors, holds the record for smallest winning cast, while Gosford Park‘s record-setting 20-person winning ensemble represented a fraction of the film’s full company. Whether The Odyssey‘s eight can translate their collective pedigree into an Actor Awards ensemble nomination — and whether any of the film’s supporting players can break through individually — will become clearer as the film’s awards campaign takes shape.
