If you’re missing your boy Steve Harrington from Stranger Things, then you can fill that void with Joe Keery’s new movie, Cold Storage, a sci-fi horror comedy that began streaming on MGM+ today.
Directed by Johnny Campbell, with a screenplay from Jurassic Park writer David Koepp, Cold Storage is based on Koepp’s 2020 novel of the same name. The film follows two employees (played by Joe Keery and Georgina Campbell) who work at a self-storage facility that was built over an old military base. That’s almost as bad as being built over an indigenous burial ground! Sure enough, chaos erupts when a parasitic fungi is exposed, releasing a brain-controlling microorganism that wants to take over the world.
Also starring Sosie Bacon, Vanessa Redgrave, Lesley Manville, and Liam Neeson, Cold Storage was well-liked by critics when it opened in theaters back in February. Until now, the film has only been available to buy and rent, and had not been available to watch on subscription streamer.
Even though Cold Storage is a Samuel Goldwyn Films, and not MGM, Samuel Goldwyn Films has had an output deal with MGM+ (when it was still called Epix) since 2009. It seems this deal is still in effect now that Epix is MGM+, because Cold Storage is now streaming on MGM+, free to anyone with a MGM+ subscription. Does that mean Cold Storage will eventually stream on Amazon Prime Video, now that Amazon owns MGM?
Where to watch the Cold Storage movie on streaming:
Right now, Cold Storage is streaming on MGM+, the premium channel previously known as Epix. MGM+ has been owned by Amazon since 2022, when Amazon acquired MGM. But MGM+ is still a separate streaming service from Amazon’s Prime Video. Even though Cold Storage was distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films, and not MGM, Samuel Goldwyn Films has had an output deal with MGM+ (when it was still called Epix) since 2009. It seems this deal is still in effect now that Epix is MGM+, because Cold Storage is now streaming on MGM+, free to anyone with a subscription.
MGM+ costs $7.99 a month, or $62.04 a year, for a subscription. You can get a 7-day free trial via Amazon.
If you don’t want to subscribe, you can also buy or rent the movie online. Prices may vary depending on which platform you use to buy the film, but on Prime, Cold Storage costs $5.99 to rent, and $9.99 to buy.
Cold Storage is not currently streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video for free, but it is possible you might see Cold Storage streaming on Prime Video for free eventually, now that Amazon owns MGM.
When will the Cold Storage movie be streaming on Amazon Prime Video for free?
We don’t know exactly when, or even if, Cold Storage will ever be streaming free on Prime Video. While many of the Samuel Goldwyn Films are streaming on Prime Video, not all of them have done so.
Another Samuel Goldwyn Films movie, Red Sonja (2025), was released was released on Prime Video (free to subscribers) about four-and-a-half months after opening in theaters. Given that it’s already been five months since Cold Storage opened in theaters, we’re not sure if it will ever come to Prime Video or not. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
Until then, you can stream Cold Storage on MGM+, or buy or rent Cold Storage on digital platforms.
