Paramount said “yip, yip” to the upcoming animated Avatar movie, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, and now ATLA fans are getting this highly anticipated movie much sooner than expected. In a just a few weeks, on July 25, Avatar Aang will be streaming on Paramount+. And if you wanted to watch the movie in theaters? Well, that’s rough, buddy.

The Avatar Aang movie is directed by Lauren Montgomery, and written by Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost, from a story by ATLA co-creators Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino, as well as Hedrick, and Kenneth Lin. On Tuesday, Entertainment Weekly shared an exclusive first-look at the movie’s first trailer, and announced the new July 25 release date. This is all happening so fast, for a series that is so beloved by many!

This new animated movie is a sequel to the original Avatar series, which ended with Aang as a 13-year-old kid, but a prequel to The Legend of Korra series, which followed the next Avatar after Aang’s death.

“It’s always a challenge to write a sequel. A prequel is an even bigger challenge,” Konietzko told Entertainment Weekly. “And a ‘se-prequel’ or whatever we’re gonna call it, this other third type is maybe the most challenging.”

When is the Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie release date?

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie will be released on streaming on Paramount+ on July 25, 2026. That’s much sooner than expected! Previously, the movie had been set to release in theaters on October 9, 2026.

This is the fourth time the Avatar Aang movie release date has been changed. Originally, it was set to release last October 2025, and then was then delayed until January 2026, and then was delayed again to October 2026. Now, with the July 25 release date, fans will get to see the movie sooner than expected. But the pushed-up Avatar Aang release date comes at a cost: No theatrical release.

Will the Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie be released in theaters?

Sadly, the Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie is no longer being released in theaters, and instead will go straight to streaming on Paramount+ on July 25.

According to an Entertainment Weekly exclusive, the shift from the theatrical release to the streaming release has less to do with the online leak of the film in April, and more to do with leadership changes at Paramount, following the merger of Skydance and Paramount in August 2025. Apparently, the film had already moved to a streaming-only release before the leak in April 2026.

“We were trying to be like, ‘Let’s make the best of this new situation, let’s adapt to that,’ and then it got stolen, which was just very unceremonious and abrupt and a bit rude,” Avatar co-creator Bryan Konietzko told Entertainment Weekly.

“At least for me, now that the film is ready to finally be out officially in the world, the excitement’s back,” Avatar co-creator Michael DiMartino added. “And I’m excited for everybody to finally see it in their homes, wherever they’re watching, with their friends. Hopefully people can recreate some kind of community experience because the big part about Avatar is the community.”

When asked if the creators felt similarly to fans about the scrapped theatrical release, Konietzko responded, “We all have feelings about it. Hollywood is changing rapidly. Even on Korra, we got caught up in it. Then here again, we found ourselves originally on one path under one set of leadership and then that path changed. I think it’s just part of a broader thing that all studios and a lot of our friends and colleagues are also dealing with on other projects.”

In the trailer, Aang (voiced by Eric Nam) discovers a new-new Airbender frozen in ice named Tagah, voiced by Dave Bautista. And according to Fire Lord Zuko (voiced by Oscar-nominated actor Steven Yeun), Tagah is attractive. It’s all in the bone structure!

Aang, Zuko, Katara, Sokka, and Toph welcome Tagah into Team Avatar, and join him in his quest to bring back the Air Nomads.

Who is in the Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie voice cast?

The Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie voice cast includes Eric Nam as Aang, Dave Bautista as Tagah, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Steven Yeun as Fire Lord Zuko, Dionne Quan as Toph Beifong, Taika Waititi as the spirit known as Gorillavark, Ken Jeong as the Cabbage Merchant, Geraldine Viswanathan as a new character named Kallak, Dee Bradley Baker as Appa and Momo, Freida Pinto as Avatar Sonam, and Ke Huy Quan as Avatar Xian.
