Thanks to the Minions and those Super Marios Bros., Illumination has become a major box office player in the world of animation. And just ahead of their latest effort, Minions & Monsters hitting theaters, the company has unveiled a first look at a new original concept.
But don’t worry. This one still has little blobby guys in it.
The teaser trailer for Not Alone has landed, supported by an impressive voice cast, so here’s everything you need to know about the next big thing from Illumination.
The Trailer
The Cast
The human love birds at the center of this intergalactic comedy are voiced by Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez. And while Gomez has some voice acting experience thanks to her time spent at Hotel Transylvania, Not Alone marks the first-ever feature-length animated film role for Chalamet.
In the supporting cast, Chalamet and Gomez will be backed by Rob Brydon (The Trip), Diane Morgan (Cunk on Life), Jamie Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats), Allison Janney, Lamorne Morris, and Brett Goldstein.
The Story
Not Alone tells the story of the budding romance between Joe (Chalamet), an awkward mechanic, and Fran (Gomez), an astro-botanist who is working on the first plant-fueled rocket. The two’s meet cute is interrupted, however, by the arrival of three fugitive aliens (Brydon, Morgan, and Demetriou), who are on the run (in space) from the law of their home planet (Goldstein).
The Creative Team
Not Alone is directed by Illumination vets Eric Guillon (co-director on Despicable Me 3), Claire Dodgson (editor of Minions: The Rise of Gru), and Jonathan Del Val (co-director of The Secret Life of Pets 2).
The Release Date
The film is set for release on April 16, 2027.
Awards Chances
Despite their massive box office successes, Illumination has never been a favorite of the Academy. Only one of their release — Despicable Me 2 — has ever made it into Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, and it ultimately lost to Frozen.
Presenting an original idea for the first time since 2023’s Migration, could Illumination break its nomination dry spell with Not Alone?
