Project Hail Mary is officially on the board in the marathon race to the 2027 Oscars. Amazon MGM’s space odyssey picked up its first Best Picture accolade on Tuesday at the 2026 Astra Midseason Movie Awards. The film also scored Best Director for the tandem of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, while stars Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller finished as runners-up for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Earth-bound The Invite earned prizes for Best Screenplay and Penélope Cruz as Best Supporting Actress, and Obsession breakout star Inde Navarrette was named Best Actress. Elsewhere, Michael‘s father-son duo of Jaafar Jackson and Colman Domingo respectively received Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor honors.

As their name suggests, the Astra Midseason Awards take the temperature of the first half of the year, meaning there’s still a long way to go before we have our Oscar field set. In fact, the awards acknowledge the giants looming on the horizon, with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey named Most Anticipated Film for the second half of 2026.
The Astra Awards are presented by the Hollywood Creative Alliance, whose membership includes actors, artisans, creatives, critics, directors, journalists, podcasters, publicists, producers, writers, and other industry professionals.
