Netflix‘s Avatar: The Last Airbender has returned for its second season.
Whether you watched the original animated series or not, many fans of the live-action version already knew the story of how the four nations—the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and and the Air Nomads—once lived in harmony until the Fire Nation started a war. The series follows Aang (Gordon Cormier), a young boy who is the last of the Air Nomads, as he goes on a journey to master the elements and end the Fire Nation’s reign of terror with the help of his friends and allies.
The live-action series has taken a lot of creative liberties throughout its production to stand out from the original. In Season 2, the Netflix adaptation introduced a new original character to the series who helps drive a few fan-favorite characters’ arcs forward.
Who is Fei on ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’?
Fei is an original character in Netflix’s live action adaptation. She was specifically developed for this adaptation, and does not appear in the original animated series. Played by actress Madison Hu, Fei is a member of the Earth Kingdom and introduced in the second episode as a way to confront Zuko (Dallas Liu) with the consequences of the Fire Nation’s rampage.
Zuko is introduced to Fei by her brother Peng (Rickie Wang), a young boy Zuko helps in the market. The siblings invite Zuko into their home where he learns of their tragic backstory, brought on by the actions of the Fire Nation. Fei and Zuko shared an emotionally charged moment.
Who is Madison Hu?
The name Madison Hu might sound familiar if you were still watching Disney Channel in the late 2010s. The 24-year-old actress is best known for her role as Frankie Wong in the comedy series Bizaardvark, alongside Olivia Rodrigo and Jake Paul. She also did a brief stint on the show Best Friends Whenever. Outside of Disney, she has been in films such as The Boogeyman, Night Shift, Voyagers and The Brothers Sun.
Prior to getting the role of Fei, people were already fan casting Madison Hu as other characters in the ATLA universe. The most popular one being Mei, who is played by Thalia Tran.
How does Madison Hu know Olivia Rodrigo?
As previously stated, Madison Hu and Olivia Rodrigo starred alongside each other in Disney’s Bizaardvark. The two played onscreen best friends Frankie and Paige, who ran an online comedy channel where they did funny music videos and sketches. The two remained best friends after filming—12 years in counting—and you can see them often featured on each other’s instagram feeds or just out and about.
