YouTube TV Has a New Bug, But They Are Working on a Fix

YouTube TV users relying on Google TV devices are facing a frustrating setback with a once-convenient feature that allowed seamless channel navigation directly from the remote control. The channel up and down buttons, which previously enabled quick switches between live programming without navigating menus, have stopped functioning within the YouTube TV app on affected devices. This disruption has left many subscribers unable to flip through channels as effortlessly as before, forcing them to rely on on-screen guides or voice commands that often feel less intuitive during live viewing sessions.

The issue appears widespread among Google TV streaming devices, including those integrated into smart televisions and standalone streamers. In normal operation, pressing the dedicated channel buttons on the remote would cycle through available live channels in YouTube TV, mimicking traditional cable or satellite remote experiences. That responsiveness has vanished, with the buttons registering no action at all inside the app. Users report the problem emerged recently, disrupting what had become a staple of the platform’s user-friendly design on Google’s ecosystem. For families gathered around evening news or sports broadcasts, the change has introduced unnecessary friction, turning a simple button press into a multi-step process involving the app’s full interface.

Community discussions on have highlighted the scope of the outage, with numerous threads detailing identical experiences across various Google TV hardware setups. Subscribers describe attempting restarts, app updates, and even full device resets, only to find the channel buttons remain unresponsive specifically within YouTube TV. Other streaming services on the same devices continue to respond normally to the remote inputs, isolating the fault to YouTube TV’s implementation. This selective breakdown suggests a software-level conflict rather than a hardware failure, potentially stemming from a recent update to either the app or the underlying Google TV operating system.

Google is reportedly aware of the problem and has teams actively investigating a resolution. Internal efforts are underway to restore the feature, though no official timeline has been shared publicly. The company has a track record of addressing streaming app integrations swiftly, especially given YouTube TV’s position as a major cord-cutting alternative with millions of subscribers.

For now, affected subscribers can navigate YouTube TV using the remote’s directional pad to scroll through the live guide or select channels manually from the home screen. Some have turned to third-party remotes or smartphone apps as temporary solutions, but these add complexity that defeats the purpose of a streamlined experience. Others have paused live viewing in favor of on-demand content until the fix arrives.
