Amazon’s New Stargate Series Is Dead—Here’s How You Can Still Watch Every Show and Movie Online

In a surprising blow for Gaters everywhere, Amazon MGM Studios has canceled its new Stargate series before filming even began.

The cancellation has also sparked a strong reaction from fans. A Reddit thread calling on viewers to cancel their Prime memberships in protest has gone viral within the Stargate community. Many fans are expressing frustration that Amazon acquired MGM and the rights to the franchise only to shelve plans for a new series. While it’s unclear whether the movement will have any impact on Amazon’s decision-making, it highlights just how passionate the Stargate fanbase remains more than 30 years after the original movie premiered.

Despite its cancellation, the franchise remains one of the most influential science-fiction properties ever created. Since the original film debuted in 1994, Stargate has grown into a sprawling universe spanning multiple television series, movies, novels, comics, and games. Its blend of ancient mythology, military sci-fi, and interplanetary exploration helped shape an entire generation of genre television, with Stargate SG-1 becoming one of the longest-running and most successful sci-fi series in TV history.

While a new chapter may be on hold, cord cutters still have plenty of ways to revisit the franchise’s iconic adventures today. For fans who want the easiest free option with no sign-up required, you can watch the 24/7 Stargate channel on Plex and other FAST services.

Watch the Movie That Started It All: Stargate

Roland Emmerich’s original film introduced audiences to the Stargate, an ancient portal capable of transporting travelers across the galaxy. Starring Kurt Russell and James Spader, the 1994 film blends military action, ancient Egyptian mythology, and science fiction into a story that would eventually launch one of TV’s biggest sci-fi franchises.

Stargate SG-1 Is Still the Franchise’s Defining Series

If there’s one Stargate series every fan should watch, it’s Stargate SG-1 (1997- 2007). Picking up after the events of the movie, the series follows Colonel Jack O’Neill and the SG-1 team as they explore distant worlds, battle the Goa’uld, and uncover the secrets of the Ancients.

Stargate Infinity Offers a Different Take on the Universe

Often overlooked by fans, Stargate Infinity is the franchise’s animated series. The 2002 show follows a group of young cadets and their mentor after they become stranded across the galaxy and must clear their names while searching for a way home. While it exists outside the main continuity, it’s still an interesting curiosity for completists.

Stargate Atlantis Expanded the Universe Beyond the Milky Way

Many fans consider Atlantis (2004 -2009) the perfect companion series to SG-1, thanks to its mix of adventure, humor, and mythology. After years of teasing the lost city of Atlantis, the franchise finally sent an expedition to the Pegasus Galaxy. There, explorers discovered the legendary city and encountered the Wraith, one of the franchise’s most memorable villains.

Stargate Universe Took the Franchise in a Darker Direction

Premiering in 2009, Stargate Universe pushed the franchise in a more serialized and dramatic direction. The series follows a group of civilians and military personnel stranded aboard the ancient starship Destiny billions of light-years from Earth. Though divisive when it first aired, the show has developed a stronger following in the years since its 2011 cancellation.

Stargate: Continuum Delivered One of SG-1’s Biggest Alternate Timelines

Often regarded as one of the strongest Stargate movies, 2008’s Stargate: Continuum was released after the end of SG-1. The film sees Ba’al alter history by preventing the Stargate program from ever being established. The resulting timeline sends familiar characters into an entirely different version of Earth’s history.

Stargate: The Ark of Truth Wrapped Up the Ori Storyline

Designed as a direct continuation of SG-1, 2008’s The Ark of Truth concludes the battle against the Ori. The film gives longtime viewers a satisfying conclusion to one of the series’ biggest story arcs while delivering plenty of classic Stargate action.

Stargate Origins Explores the Franchise’s Earliest Days

Released in 2018, Stargate Origins serves as a prequel focused on Catherine Langford, whose father helped uncover the Stargate decades before the events of the original movie. The series offers fans a look at the early mysteries surrounding the gate and the people who first discovered it.

The Stargate Franchise Lives On Even Without a New Series

While Amazon’s planned revival may no longer be happening, the Stargate franchise remains remarkably accessible for cord cutters. Between Plex’s free Stargate channel and the growing number of streaming services carrying the franchise, fans can still experience everything from the original movie to Atlantis, Universe, and beyond. Even Netflix has added all 10 seasons of SG-1 to its catalog.

For now, the future of Stargate may be uncertain. Its past, however, is only a few clicks away.
