Miss You, Love You Emmy submissions: Allison Janney, Andrew Rannells

Debuting Friday on HBO, Miss You, Love You is one of the last projects to be released this Emmy cycle; May 31 is the eligibility cut-off date.

Gold Derby has learned that HBO’s original made-for-TV movie is submitting in 16 Emmy categories, including Best Movie/Limited Actress for Allison Janney and Best Movie/Limited Actor for Andrew Rannells. Janney plays Diane, a grieving widow who is forced to plan her husband’s funeral with a total stranger: her estranged son’s assistant, Jamie Simms, played by Rannells.

A third performer is also being entered for consideration in Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress: Bonnie Hunt as Judith Bibbs, Diane’s nosy neighbor and friend from church.

Jim Rash, an Oscar winner for writing The Descendants (2011), will be on the Emmy ballot for writing and directing Miss You, Love You. Below-the-line submissions include cinematography, costumes, hairstyling, makeup, music composition, music & lyrics, picture editing, production design, sound editing, and sound mixing.

Janney is an awards juggernaut, winning an Oscar for I, Tonya (2017) and seven Emmys for The West Wing (2000-02, 2004), Mom (2014-15), and Masters of Sex (2014). An eighth Primetime Emmy win would tie her with Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus — and Janney has three chances at it this year since she’s also in The Diplomat and Palm Royale.

The Emmy contest for Best Movie has received pushback in recent years, as certain winners were seen as lacking prestige — think Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square (2021) and Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022). It was even recently rebranded from Best Television Movie to Best Movie to “more accurately reflect the evolving landscape of cinematic content created for broadcast or streaming.” HBO is no doubt hoping that Miss You, Love You ignites the cultural zeitgeist and turns the tables on how awards fans view this particular category.

Here are all of the categories in which Miss You, Love You is submitting for the 2026 Emmys.
