When Survivor became a cultural phenomenon in 2000, the Emmys had no category for a show like it. The series was forced to compete in the catch-all race of Best Non-Fiction Program (Special Class), which it won. Years later, its success inspired the creation of Best Competition Program in 2003 — a category it has ironically never won. Until now?
Thanks to this spring’s landmark 50th season that brought back fan-favorite castaways from all eras of the show, Survivor may have the strongest chance yet to finally win the Emmy for Best Competition Program. Don’t just take our word for it. We asked the players themselves what they think of the show’s chances, and they don’t hold back.
“Survivor is the gold standard for reality competition shows — its legacy speaks for itself,” Mike White tells us. He knows a thing or two about Emmys, having won three for writing, directing, and producing The White Lotus. “Giving the Emmy to Survivor 50 is a great way to honor the history of the show and its cultural impact.”
Primetime Emmy Awards 2026
According to Gold Derby’s Emmy experts, The Traitors has a commanding 95% chance of winning for the third consecutive time, followed by Survivor in second place with 5%. Season 4 of The Traitors notably included three Survivor legends within its ranks — Rob Cesternino, Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho, and Natalie Anderson — so reality TV superfans will have plenty to cheer about either way.
Even though Rob appeared on the rival Peacock show, he still credits Survivor 50 for figuring out a way to bring back 24 players and deliver a “wild, rollercoaster ride that none of us could have seen coming.” But what deserves to win? “Don’t ask me to pick between my favorite children,” he laughs. “Listen, flip a coin, and let MrBeast decide the Emmy.”
Speaking of Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson, the 50th season introduced a new twist in the form of celebrities. MrBeast offered the contestants a chance to risk their own game by flipping a coin. Rick Devens took the media mogul up on his offer and ended up doubling the prize pot from $1 million to $2 million. The move went viral and helped get Rick cast on the next season of Big Brother.
Other celebs included country music star Zac Brown, who popped up at a reward; musician Billie Eilish, whose Boomerang Idol was a big flop; Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, whose twist caused Christian Hubicki to vote against himself; and singer Sia, who awarded Cirie Fields with a $100K check.

“Survivor’s been the best show on TV for 50 seasons,” Rick tells us. “It’s an atrocity that it hasn’t won the Emmy [for Best Competition Program], but every one of these castaways absolutely brought their A-game. They crushed it out there. And the production crew is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. You might think you know what happens behind the scenes, but you have no idea how absolutely passionate and committed every single person on this crew is. They never have a moment off. They’re always giving it 100%.” He shouts, “If it doesn’t win the Emmy this year, end the Emmys!” (Rick’s answers came in before he spent the summer in the Big Brother house.)
Christian adds, “Survivor 50 has so much going for it, not the least of which is the cast. This is a crazy group of people that we got together — crazy in the best way. The chemistry that we have really should get some consideration. People need to understand how much effort and depth and thought goes into every element, not only in terms of how we play, but how we’re put together.”
Cirie chimes in, “The longevity that this franchise has exhibited is never the same. Even after 50 seasons, being a fan and a player, it kept me on my toes at all times. My mind has been blown so many times. There’s been so many firsts. It’s like the new beginnings of Survivor, and that’s why we deserve to win the Emmy.”

“Survivor is timeless,” notes Aubry Bracco, the $2 million winner of this anniversary season. She even gives a shout-out to the show’s host and showrunner: “I’ve never met someone so dedicated to growing and evolving like Jeff. That man never stops! The way in which Jeff and this entire team have pushed their life’s work to the next level, they deserve all the accolades they get. It’s a savage business, and I think they’ve demonstrated that they outlast everybody.”
Jeff Probst is nominated for Best Reality Host, the same Emmy contest he won four times between 2008 and ’11. He has a 3% shot of claiming victory again, but first he has to find a way to stop the momentum of Alan Cumming (The Traitors), who has a leading 93% chance of claiming his fourth consecutive statue. Meanwhile, RuPaul Charles (RuPaul’s Drag Race) is in third place with 2% after winning eight times between 2016 and ’23.
Creative Arts Emmy Awards 2026
Benjamin “Coach” Wade, one of the most memorable players of all time, likens the series to a “living, breathing organism.” It has “continued to evolve and change” through the years, turning into the “magnificent creature that we see now,” he remarks. Coach then questions whether there are any other competition shows on television that are “smart enough to keep pushing” in the same way as Survivor. That’s a question Emmy voters now must answer.
This year, Survivor 50 is nominated for five Emmys: series, host, casting, cinematography, and picture editing. The show has won seven Emmy Awards over the past two-and-a-half decades.
Find out who wins when the Creative Arts Emmys take place Sept. 5–6 and the Primetime ceremony airs Sept. 14.
