If you’re a Jane Austen fanatic, chances are you’ve already been inundated on social media with clips from The Other Bennet Sister. The new series just wrapped a triumphant run on BBC One in the UK, nabbing the biggest debut for a drama in the country in over a year, and is finally making its way across the pond this week. So how can you watch The Other Bennet Sister in the USA?
Based on the beloved novel by Janice Hadlow, The Other Bennet Sister shifts the perspective in Austen’s Pride & Prejudice away from the dazzling Elizabeth Bennet and towards her younger sister Mary (Ella Bruccoleri). Often depicted as the black sheep of the Bennet clan, thanks to her somber attitude and awkward manners, Mary is now fully explored as both an observer of Austen’s romance and as a heroine in her own right. After her sisters are all married, Mary finds herself unsure of what comes next. She travels to London to work as a governess for her aunt and uncle and begins to reassess her worth.
If Pride & Prejudice is a book that explores how our first impressions of others can be wrong, then The Other Bennet Sister is a story that makes a similar argument, but for how we see ourselves. In leaving her family behind, Mary begins to assert her own opinions and to discover her own circle of friends. Soon, the dashing bachelor Charles Ryder (Laurie Davidson) and sensitive barrister Tom Hayward (Dónal Finn) are in Mary’s orbit. Will Mary Bennet finally get her own happily after?
